About Our Clinic
Caloundra Private Clinic provides comprehensive mental health services, treating patients with chronic and acute mental health and substance use disorders; providing both inpatient and outpatient services.
Our clinic is a 46-bed, private, inpatient, mental health hospital. We offer treatment and services for a range of mental health conditions including anxiety and depression, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol and drug use disorder.
Owned and operated by Ramsay Health Care, Australia's largest and most respected operator of private hospitals, Caloundra Private Clinic is located at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast in peaceful surroundings, only minutes from Dicky Beach.
Originally called the Andrea Ahern Private Hospital, our hospital was built in 1984 and comprised 40 acute medical and surgical beds, and one operating theatre. It was named after former Queensland Premier Mike Ahern's wife.
In 1986 it was purchased by MBF Australia and underwent major extensions and renovations with a master plan drafted for future possible development. In 1992 a two-stage redevelopment of the operating theatre was completed, wards were totally refurbished and the hospital grounds re-landscaped. Two years later, the Hospital's Day Surgery Unit opened. In 1996, an additional 24 beds were added bringing the total to 64 beds evenly split between medical and surgical wards.
The hospital has been through several changes in ownership over the years; most recently becoming part of Ramsay Health Care in 2005. In 2013, it was renamed Caloundra Private Clinic. The medical and surgical services were relocated to our sister hospital, the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, when it opened.

We monitor clinical outcomes of the treatments we provide to ensure that we are delivering effective and evidence-based treatments. One example of this is using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale for our rTMS patients at the Pre, 10 and 20 treatment marks. As you can see from the graph below, we can demonstrate that (on average), that this is a highly effective treatment for patients with depression.

We evaluate our patient outcomes in many ways. For example our Patient Satisfaction Surveys and the Mental Health Questionnaire which is given to patients to complete on admission and on discharge. These are benchmarked against private mental health facilities throughout Australia and the information is used to continually improve our facilities and our programs. From the graph above, we consistently score well (green) and higher than comparative hospitals (blue).
Some examples of positive patient feedback include:
“The entire team were very supportive. My individual needs were always taken into account and respected. I felt really validated that my knowledge and experience of my illness and the ability to be heard formed a plan that catered to me. Any issues I had were dealt with immediately” (October 2018)
“The nurses, social workers and everyone involved in my care all deserve a pat on the back especially my long hard journey in here – they gave me so much support and I wouldn’t have made it this far without all the support and care” (November 2018)
